My eldest felt the Florida sun on her skin for the first time when she was eleven-months-old. My wife and I rented a house on Sanibel Island and spent a month soaking in the briny sea, collecting memories of our whole world squishing sand between her toes and rolling shells between her fingers and feeling the salt water wash over her body as she slipped between waves with my wife and I. This past week I was able to spend a morning at Lido Key with a family experiencing those same firsts I remember so well with their young daughter of fifteen-months. As I followed them along the shore, watching them watch her, I was filled with the warmth of nostalgia. Her wonder as the waves rolled in and as the sand dusted her skin and as the sun rose, filling the air with that feeling of summer, was so beautiful. Even when she took a tumble, sand caking her face (complete with a shell resembling a shark tooth stuck to her bottom lip), she never lost her sense of complete awe at the Florida seaside. It was such a joy getting to know this sweet little family, making memories I hope they’ll remember for years to come.
