Last weekend’s photoshoot was a touch bittersweet. I spent my evening with a family who had built a life here in the Florida sun but was heading to a more northern climate at weeks end, and so we were there, between sand and waves, capturing a family’s goodbye wave to a Florida sunset. As the family laughed and played and hugged and stared off into the sea (and at times directly into the sun) I couldn’t help but feel a little nostalgic. I’ve been there myself. I moved around as a kid, and more recently as an adult, and so I know the feeling of leaving a home behind in pursuit of a new life that will hopefully soon feel like home. As I spent time with this family, just chatting with them about their feelings on their move, their positive outlook shone through. I got the feeling that it wouldn’t take long for their new house to be a home. As the sun disappeared into the sea and kids got tossed into the ocean for the last time (at least for a while), I said my goodbyes to this family and wished them safe travels. Moving away is always hard, but as I’ve personally experienced, the outcome can be beautiful. When they look at these photos, I hope they smile and think of good times passed, and good times to come.
